Before Installation Day: What You Need to Prepare
The most important thing to do before your installation day is to clear the wardrobe area completely. This means:
•       Removing all clothing, shoes, accessories, and storage items from the existing wardrobe, cupboard, or alcove where the new wardrobe will be installed
•       Moving any furniture that sits close to the installation wall and may need to be shifted to give the team clear working access
•       Clearing a path from the access point of your home to the installation room, so the team can move panels and materials without obstruction
•       If you have an older built-in wardrobe being removed as part of the process, confirm with the Impressive Wardrobes team ahead of time whether removal and disposal are included in your booking
The installation team will treat your home with care, but access to the work area without obstacles makes the job faster and reduces the risk of accidental contact with your belongings.

💡 Pet and children management: Consider keeping young children and pets in a separate area of the home during the installation. The team will be bringing in panels, tracks, and tools, and moving between the entry point and the work area. This is for safety as much as practicality. |

The Installation Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Arrival and space assessment
The installation team will arrive within the agreed window and begin with a brief review of the installation space. They will check that the measurements from the design visit match the actual space and confirm the scope of work. If there are any minor site discrepancies, experienced installers can typically address them on the day. If a significant issue is identified, the team will contact you to discuss before proceeding.
Step 2: Site protection
Before any work begins, the team will lay protective sheeting or floor protection to cover flooring and any adjacent furniture. The installation area will be contained so that any dust from drilling into walls and cutting adjustments is managed and minimised.
Step 3: Removal of existing fittings (if applicable)
If your wardrobe space currently has an existing rail, shelf, or older built-in arrangement, these will be removed first. Wall patching for old fixing holes is typically done as part of this stage.
Step 4: Installation of the carcass and structural elements
The structural carcass of the wardrobe, the vertical panels, horizontal shelves, and base, is assembled and fixed into position. For a built-in wardrobe, the carcass is secured to the walls at the top and sides to create a stable, integrated structure. The precision of this stage determines the final alignment of doors and hardware, which is why the team takes care to ensure everything is level and square before proceeding.
Step 5: Internal fittings
Once the carcass is in place, the internal elements are installed: hanging rails, shelf inserts, drawer boxes, accessory fittings, and any specialised storage components included in your design. This is the stage where the wardrobe's internal organisation takes shape and where you start to see how the space you designed during the consultation will actually function day to day.
Step 6: Door installation
The door panels are hung and adjusted last. For sliding door wardrobes, the top and bottom tracks are fitted first, then the door panels are set into the tracks and adjusted for smooth, even operation. For hinged door wardrobes, the concealed hinges are mounted to the door panels and then the doors are hung on the carcass and adjusted for alignment, closing depth, and soft-close action. Hardware, handles, and knobs are fitted at this stage.
Step 7: Final inspection and adjustment
Once all elements are installed, the team carries out a full inspection of the completed wardrobe. They will check that:
•       All doors open and close correctly and smoothly
•       Shelves, drawers, and rails are level and secure
•       Alignment across the full wardrobe face is consistent
•       All hardware is firmly attached and operating as expected
•       The installation area is cleaned and tidy
Any minor adjustments, such as door alignment, handle positioning, or shelf height, are made at this stage. The team will not leave until the wardrobe is operating correctly.
Step 8: Handover and walkthrough
The final step is a walkthrough with you. The installer will show you how the wardrobe operates, particularly any soft-close mechanisms, specialty fittings, or care requirements. This is your opportunity to raise any questions or points before the team leaves.

How Long Does Installation Take?
The duration of wardrobe installation depends on the size and complexity of the wardrobe and the number of components being installed. As a general guide:
•       A single-wall built-in wardrobe with standard configuration typically takes between 3 and 6 hours
•       A walk-in wardrobe with multiple wall sections, drawers, and specialist fittings may take a full day
•       Installations involving removal of an existing wardrobe will typically add 1 to 2 hours to the overall job
The Impressive Wardrobes team will give you a realistic time estimate when confirming your installation booking, and will aim to complete within that window.
After Installation: Getting Your Wardrobe Ready to Use
Once the installation is complete and the team has left, there is a small amount of settling in to do. A few recommendations:
•       Wait at least a few hours before loading heavy items onto shelves, particularly if any adhesive or sealant was used during installation
•       Do a brief check of all doors and drawers yourself before loading the wardrobe, so any minor adjustments are identified while the job is fresh
•       Download or print the Impressive Wardrobes Care and Maintenance Booklet (available on the website) to understand how to clean and look after your specific finish

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be home for the entire installation?
It is strongly recommended that at least one adult is present during the installation. The team may need to clarify positioning decisions during the job, and you will need to be available for the final walkthrough and sign-off. If you need to leave briefly, confirm this with the team lead when they arrive.
How is the wardrobe attached to the wall?
Built-in wardrobes are fixed to the wall studs using appropriate fasteners for the wall type (plasterboard into stud, masonry fixings for brick or concrete). The installation is structural and the wardrobe will be stable and integrated into the wall rather than simply standing against it. This is part of what distinguishes a built-in from a freestanding piece of furniture.
Can installation happen in a room that is currently used for sleeping?
Yes, provided the room can be vacated and cleared for the installation day. Some dust is generated during drilling and fitting, so allowing the room to air for several hours after the installation is complete is recommended before sleeping in it that night.
