Supply and Install vs Supply and Pick Up Wardrobes: What's the Difference?

Supply and Install vs Supply and Pick Up Wardrobes: What's the Difference?

When you start getting wardrobe quotes, you will quickly encounter two purchasing models: supply and install, where the company designs, manufactures, and installs the wardrobe in your home; and supply and pick up (or supply only), where the company manufactures the wardrobe and you collect it and install it yourself. Both are legitimate options, and the right choice depends on a combination of your budget, your skills, and the complexity of what you are having made.

Impressive Wardrobes offers supply and install across most of the Sydney metropolitan area and can advise on which option suits your specific project. Here is the complete breakdown of what each model covers and what questions to ask before committing.

What Supply and Install Includes

Supply and install is the complete service. The wardrobe company is responsible for:

Measuring: a designer or installer comes to your home, takes precise measurements, identifies any site-specific challenges (uneven walls, obstacles, cornices), and designs the wardrobe to the actual dimensions of the space

Design: the wardrobe configuration (hanging sections, shelves, drawers, doors) is designed in consultation with you during the home visit or in a follow-up design session

Manufacturing: the wardrobe panels, shelves, drawers, and doors are manufactured to the design specifications

Delivery: components are delivered to the installation address

Installation: an experienced installation team assembles and installs the wardrobe in the room. This includes fixing panels to walls and floor, fitting doors and hardware, making adjustments for wall imperfections, and finishing to a professional standard

Guarantee: the installed wardrobe is covered by the company's workmanship and product guarantee. Impressive Wardrobes provides a 10-year guarantee on all installed work, with no excuses

The installation step is where the professional-versus-DIY distinction becomes most significant. Installing a custom built-in wardrobe involves fixing panels to walls that are rarely perfectly square, scribing panels to fit imperfect surfaces, fitting door hardware to precise tolerances, and ensuring the finished wardrobe is level, plumb, and exactly aligned. It is not a task for someone without cabinetry experience.

What Supply and Pick Up (Supply Only) Includes

The supply and pick up model covers the manufacturing of the wardrobe components only. The customer is responsible for:

Collecting the manufactured components from the warehouse or factory

Transporting the components to the installation address

Assembling and installing the wardrobe in the room

In this model, the company provides the manufactured panels, shelving, doors, and hardware based on a design that has typically been done by the customer (or in some cases, with basic guidance from the company). The installation itself, including fixing, scribing, levelling, and door adjustment, is the customer's responsibility.

What supply only does not include: In a supply-only arrangement, the company's responsibility ends when the components leave their premises. If panels are damaged during the customer's collection or transport, if installation errors occur, or if components do not fit correctly due to measurement errors made by the customer, the cost of rectification falls on the customer. Clarify these terms carefully before choosing the supply-only model.

The Cost Difference

Supply and pick up is less expensive than supply and install because the company's cost of providing labour (the designer visit, the installation team, the travel time, and the installation hours) is removed from the price. This saving can be meaningful, particularly for simple wardrobe configurations.

However, the cost saving needs to be weighed against several factors that add costs back in for the DIY customer:

Transport: wardrobe components are typically large sheet goods that require a van or ute to transport. Hire vehicle costs or freight costs add to the supply-only price

Tools: professional installation of a built-in wardrobe requires specific tools including a level, drill, impact driver, saw (for scribing), and hardware-specific tools. If you do not own these, hire or purchase adds cost

Time: installation time for a standard built-in wardrobe by an experienced team is typically a half-day to a full day. An inexperienced DIY installer will typically take considerably longer, which has a real personal cost

Errors: measurement errors or installation mistakes that require replacement panels or correction are the customer's cost in a supply-only model

Guarantee: in many supply-only arrangements, the product guarantee covers the components only, not the installation. If a door is hanging incorrectly because of an installation error, rectifying it is the customer's responsibility

Who Supply and Install Is Right For

Anyone who wants a custom wardrobe fitted precisely to their space with a professional finish and long-term guarantee

Homeowners who do not have cabinetry installation experience

Projects with challenging sites: uneven walls, sloping ceilings, complex alcoves, or heritage features that require careful scribing

Projects where the wardrobe is part of a larger renovation and installation quality needs to match the standard of other work

Anyone who values their time and does not want to spend weekends managing a complex DIY installation

Who Supply and Pick Up Is Right For

Experienced DIY builders or tradespeople (carpenters, joiners) who are confident with cabinetry installation

Simple wardrobe configurations in regular, square spaces with no significant obstacles

Projects where the budget is the primary constraint and the customer has the skills, tools, and time to complete the installation themselves

Rental investment properties where budget efficiency is a priority and professional finish is secondary

⚠️  Check licensing requirements: In New South Wales, certain types of residential renovation and construction work require a licensed contractor. For most standard wardrobe installations, no specific licence is required for the homeowner to install their own wardrobe. However, any electrical work (including wardrobe lighting connections) must be done by a licensed electrician. Check with NSW Fair Trading if you are uncertain about the requirements for your specific project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a custom-designed wardrobe myself?

It is possible for an experienced DIY person to install a custom wardrobe, particularly if the space is a regular rectangular alcove with straight walls and no significant obstacles. However, custom built-in wardrobes involve precise fitting that is significantly more demanding than assembling flat-pack furniture. Most homeowners who attempt a DIY installation of a custom wardrobe find it takes much longer than expected and the results are often not to the level of a professional installation. Impressive Wardrobes' supply and install service takes all of this off your hands with a 10-year guarantee.

How long does professional wardrobe installation take?

The installation time for a custom built-in wardrobe by an Impressive Wardrobes team depends on the size and complexity of the project. A standard single-bedroom built-in wardrobe typically takes between half a day and a full day. Larger walk-in wardrobes or projects with complex features (internal lighting, multiple sections, complex scribing) may take longer. Contact the Impressive Wardrobes team to get a clear timeline estimate for your specific project.
